Performing Arts BTEC National Level 3 Extended Certificate

Course Description 

This BTEC Level 3 certificate offers an engaging curriculum to support young people who want to pursue dance, acting.  This course is the equivalent to one A Level and will successfully prepare students for a range of Apprenticeships and University courses.  Students will study five units each expanding their  skills in improvisation, choreography, and performance amongst others. 

Students will be able to specialise in one discipline, with some units taught together

The Course

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Performing Arts is a 360 guided learning hours (GLH) qualification that consists of four units.  

The following mandatory units will be taught across the two year course:

  • Developing Skills and Techniques for Performance­­­
  • Group Performance Workshop
  • Investigating Practitioners’ Work

The units below are chosen from the optional units list, and therefore could be subject to change based upon the cohort each year:

  • Contemporary Dance Technique
  • Acting Styles
Possible Subject combinations 

Many subjects would be compatible with this course, as this course is highly practical this could be considered in your decision making. 

Notes 

Students do not need to have studied both Dance and Drama at GCSE level to study this course. Studying one will help prepare you for this course, and you may wish to specialise in a different discipline as the course progresses.

If you have not studied either of these subjects then a strong passion for performing arts is necessary, and participation in clubs either in or out of school would be highly beneficial.  

Where could this course take me?

This course could take you onto to a university course to further your skills in performance, choreography or devising, or enable you to access an apprenticeship in sectors such as events management. 

However due to the nature of this course the skills you will develop would give you a plethora of course options.

Assessment

Students will be assessed in a variety of ways including live performances and written evidence of process and outcome. 

Two units are externally assessed and two are internally assessed.

Internal assessment briefs are set by the centre and will help students to develop a wide range of transferable skills.  

All units are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction.
