AAQ Applied Science

Course Description

The new Alternative Academic Qualification in Applied Science is equivalent to one full A Level and fully recognised by Universities. The course has been developed in consultation with higher education representatives and sector experts from associated professional bodies to ensure students have the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to progress to, and thrive, in higher education.

The overall qualification is graded as Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction Star.

The Course

Year 12

H180 Fundamentals of Science: Study Biology, Chemistry and Physics Topics - This Module has an Exam

Biology: Cell structure and microscopy, Bioenergetics, Structure and Function of Biological Molecules, Biodiversity and Ecosystems

Chemistry: Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table, Quantitative Chemistry, Structure and Bonding, Rates of Reactions and Enthalpy Changes

Physics: Electricity, Motion, Medical Physics

H181 Science in Society – This Module has an Exam

How do Scientists work?

  • How do they make decisions?
  • What counts as Scientific Evidence?
  • How is Science used in work (including Hospitals and Industry)
  • How is Science made safe?

H182 Investigating Science– This Module is coursework

You will learn about the role of a research scientist in industry by learning how to conduct your own scientific investigation.

You will develop the skills to research, plan and risk assess your investigation before safely undertaking the practical tasks.

Year 13

H182 Options – This Module is coursework

We will choose two of these Options:

Environmental Science, Analytical Techniques in Chemistry, Forensic Biology, Medical Physics

The course is NOT SUITABLE for those who wish to apply to be a Doctor, Dentist, Vet, Engineer or to study Biology, Chemistry or Physics at University.

Assessment

The two-year Extended Certificate course comprises two exams. Exams make up just 40% of the course, and they can be resat with the best mark counting.

The remaining 60% is Coursework.
