Health and Social Care - BTEC National AAQ

Course Description

The new Alternative Academic Qualification in Health and Social Care is equivalent to one full A Level and fully recognised by Universities. This qualification provides the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge of a successful practitioner. The courses teaches empathy, development through the life stages and the importance of meeting an individual's needs. The qualification is graded as Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction Star.

This qualification can lead to various HE degrees such as Social Work, Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedic Science. It will also enable those not wanting to progress into HE to move onto professional careers in the police, probation services, military and care work.

The Course

YEAR 12

Unit 1 Human Lifespan and Development

This examination unit will develop your knowledge and understanding of patterns of human growth and development. You will explore the key aspects of growth and development, and the experience of health and wellbeing. You will also learn about factors that can influence human growth, development and health.

This is an externally examined unit in May/June of Year 12.

Unit 7 Health Science

In this internally assessed unit you will explore the different types of microorganisms that cause infection and disease in humans. You will investigate the impact of the diseases on society and how outbreaks are managed. This unit is assessed through coursework.

YEAR 13

Unit 2 Human Biology and Health

This unit studies three elements of the human body:

  1. Organisation of the human body
  2. Body systems
  3. Disorders of the body and effect on body systems

This is an externally examined unit in January of Year 13.

Unit 3 Principles of Health and Social Care Practice

In this internally assessed unit, you will learn about the values, skills and principles of meeting care and support needs and how these should be applied in practice. Challenges and approaches that may arise when personalising care will be explored in detail. You will also examine the different societal factors affecting the health outcomes of individuals and the strategies used in health and social care to overcome these.

Entry Requirements

The two-year course comprises of two exams (Units 1 and 2) and two coursework assignments. Good IT and writing skills are essential. Exam retake opportunities are available on this course.

Possible Subject Combinations

Any combination - will link well with Psychology, Sociology, Biology, Ethics and Philosophy, Medical Science.

Progression to Higher Education degree courses in Health & Social Care studies, Teaching, Nursing, Health Care, Social Work, Child Care and Education, and Public Services. As it is a nationally recognized, vocationally specific qualification, it will also allow access to enter employment in the health and social care sectors.
