Summer School 2021

Year 7 Transition Support Summer School - August 2021

As an extension to our usual induction programme, Gordano School hosted a three-week Department for Education funded Summer School focussing on the Year 6 primary school pupils who were making the transition into our Year 7 cohort commencing September 2021.

The funding was introduced to assist all secondary schools in offering additional transition support in light of the disadvantages some pupils had experienced due to the disruption caused by the Covid pandemic. We are proud to be one of the 15% of secondary schools who utilised this funding and successfully delivered a Summer School programme.

Every pupil was offered a free of charge place which included 5 days of on-site activities and a daily hot lunch in our fabulous dining hall. Our aim was to provide an opportunity for our students to build a community with their future peers, forge relationships with new teachers and familiarise themselves with our school environment and routines. Out of the 390 invited students, we were delighted to host 317.

The Summer School provided our new students with a range of academic and enrichment activities such as team orientation games, African drumming, drama workshops, maths challenges, English murder mysteries, film-making, first aid, art and sports to name but a few.

To enable us to deliver such an ambitious project, we secured a team of talented teaching and support staff, both from Gordano and our primary schools coupled with the support from many of our local school partners such as Portishead Youth Club, Gordano Valley Church and the North Somerset Music Service. You can view some photos from the weeks here.

The post event parent/carer feedback survey responses received, concludes that we achieved our aims:
