Gordano Students Excel in National Junior Maths Challenge

An impressive group of 82 students from Years 7 and 8 at Gordano School recently took part in the UK Mathematics Trust’s Junior Maths Challenge (JMC) — a national competition designed to test students’ mathematical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and logical thinking through a series of 25 multiple-choice questions.

The students, who volunteered to take on the challenge in their own time, demonstrated tremendous enthusiasm and resilience in tackling the demanding paper. Their efforts were rewarded with some outstanding results.

A special congratulations goes to the six students who achieved Gold certificates, the highest award level: Haydn, Sam, Ben, Teddie, and Koroush (all Year 8), and Evan (Year 7).

Evan (pictured above) deserves an additional mention for achieving the highest score in the school — a fantastic accomplishment for a Year 7 student!

In addition to the Gold winners, 24 students earned Silver certificates and 26 were awarded Bronze, marking a brilliant performance across the board.

All students who took part should feel incredibly proud of their efforts. This event marks the final major Maths Challenge of the academic year, and the school is thrilled with the level of participation and achievement shown by its young mathematicians.

For those keen to test their own problem-solving skills, a selection of questions from this year’s Junior Maths Challenge can be found below. Remember, many of these problems are designed to be tackled through clever thinking rather than brute-force calculation — a great opportunity to stretch your brain!

Congratulations again to all involved!
