Gordano School Partners with Bristol Bears Community Foundation to Deliver Award-Winning Bright Sparks Programme

For the past three years, Gordano School has proudly partnered with the Bristol Bears Community Foundation to offer their multi award-winning Bright Sparks and Bear in Mind programmes. These innovative initiatives, recognised with numerous regional and national awards, are built around a simple but powerful principle: “reward in return for commitment.”
Delivered during curriculum time on our school site, Bright Sparks and Bear in Mind combine classroom learning with practical sessions on the sports pitches. The programmes carry a full educational award and are designed to help young people understand how their life choices—positive or negative—can shape their short, medium, and long-term futures.
Building Skills for Life
The programmes aim to develop self-esteem, confidence, and leadership skills, while also promoting teamwork and resilience. Students who take part often experience significant benefits, including:
-
Increased engagement with school
-
Improved attendance
-
Stronger communication skills and connections with others
While sport provides the vehicle for engagement, the real focus is on learning through leadership and collaboration—skills that are vital for future success.
Rewards for Commitment
Students who meet expectations and show commitment to the programme enjoy a range of exciting rewards and experiences, such as:
-
Visits to Ashton Gate Stadium
-
Tickets to Bristol Bears games
-
Official Bristol Bears training tops
The programme has covered a variety of topics and activities this term:
Bright Sparks Sessions:
-
Classroom topics: STTEP principle, participation in sport, fitness and nutrition
-
Outdoor activities: Two-touch rugby, introduction to contact, and delivering skill sessions to peers
Bear in Mind Sessions:
-
Classroom topics: Stress and resilience, body image, and the impact of social media (including online safety)
-
Outdoor activities: Rugby handling skills and game-based practices
In addition to the two structured programmes, the Bears team also offer Lunchtime Clubs:
-
Year 11 students have enjoyed football, rugby, and basketball—developing transferable skills and trying new games
-
Year 8 and 9 girls have been introduced to rugby and are building skills with the aim of competing in future games
Students can put themselves forward to be considered for the programme (applications are currently open for Year 10 girls to apply), or may be nominated by their Head of House.
Mrs Thomas said: "It is always inspiring to see the impact of a successful programme that helps our students build confidence and resilience. Receiving positive feedback from the students themselves is an excellent reminder of why we do this, and hearing from the Bristol Bears team about how impressed they are with our students makes us incredibly proud – it is a real testament to the hard work and growth of the students taking part, both past and present.”
This partnership continues to make a real difference, helping students grow in confidence, resilience, and ambition.
We look forward to seeing the Bright Sparks programme thrive at Gordano School for years to come!
