Gordano School Students Complete Successful Practice Expedition in Exmoor

Gordano students working towards their Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award have successfully completed their Practice Expedition in the stunning landscapes of Exmoor National Park. Over the course of the expedition, participants demonstrated outstanding resilience, teamwork, and navigation skills.
Staff and instructors were thoroughly impressed by the students’ positive attitudes, problem-solving abilities and commitment throughout the weekend.
"What a way to start this year's expedition season, with such a fantastic group of young people" said Rachel Allen, Silver Award Leader and teacher at Gordano school. "It was great to see their hard work, enthusiasm and camaraderie and I can't wait till our next trip to the Black Mountains!"
Gordano School is proud to have the highest number of starters of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award in the South-West for the second year running, with 336 students taking part in the Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. Each young person builds their own Duke of Edinburgh programme, picking their own activities and choosing which cause to volunteer for, in order to achieve their award. There are four main sections of a DofE Award: Physical, Skills, Volunteering and the Expedition.
The aim of DofE is to celebrate and champion every young person, whatever their ability, interest or background, offering them the chance to strive for achievement, overcome obstacles, and set their minds to a personal challenge. As the DofE Founder HRH Prince Philip once said: “There is more in you than you might think.” Potential employers and universities are frequently impressed with the internationally recognised DofE achievement, which operates in over 100 countries.
Polly Oakman, Head of Outdoor Education, said: ” The Duke of Edinburgh's Award inspires our young people to develop skills, resilience and self-belief that encourage them to pursue their own passions, overcome challenges and have a positive impact on their communities. These qualities form part of our ethos here at Gordano School.”
The experience has set a strong foundation for the cohort’s upcoming Qualifying Expedition this summer, and we have no doubt that our amazing Year 10 students will rise to the challenge.
Congratulations to all involved!
