Gordano School's female mathematicians attend an event at Bristol University to inspire women and girls in STEM

To celebrate Women and Girls in STEM day, the School of Mathematics at University of Bristol hosted an event called Stories about Hollywood's Hippest mathematics: A celebration of Women and Girls in STEM.

A number of Gordano’s finest female mathematicians attended, alongside students and staff from other schools.

The event began with a talk from Professor Nina Snaith. Nina told us how her work has inspired Hollywood and this was followed by a panel discussion of female academics (Nina Snaith (Mathematical Physics); Rachel Bennett (Mathematical Biology); Laura Monk (Pure Mathematics) & Asma Hassannezhad (Analysis)), who shared some of the interesting work that they have done and how this has made a difference, alongside discussing some of the difficulties they’ve faced as women in Mathematics, which remains a male-dominated field of study.

I liked talking to Nina Snaith afterwards about how random matrices work; it was good to learn some interesting Maths.

To top it all off, the event was followed by a pizza reception and the students got to take home a trendy Maths tote bag and water bottles!

I found it inspirational to see how far you can go with Maths… I enjoyed the lecturers’ anecdotes… it made me more confident choosing Maths A-Level.
