Modern Foreign Languages

The study of Modern Foreign Languages is a vital way for students to learn about other cultures, about how languages and meanings are formed, and develop positive attitudes towards our close neighbours in Europe.

Students need to learn the basic structures of a language and be proficient in their use. We want students to be able to give their opinion on a range of topics, as this gives them a sense of agency and the ability to communicate in the language straightaway, as well as preparing them well for the demands of the GCSE course. All contexts covered are designed to be accessible and stimulating for the students learning them. There is a significant emphasis on sound-spelling links and literacy skills in the Key Stage 3 course, which has a cross-curricular benefit for students. Students develop a secure grammatical foundation, which enables them to have a basic grasp of grammatical terms they can use throughout their language learning.
