Students Explore Construction Careers at South West Skills Campus

A group of our Year 10 and Year 11 students recently enjoyed an exciting visit to South West Skills Campus (SWSC), Weston College, where they gained first-hand insight into life as a further education student and explored potential career pathways within the construction industry.

The visit began with a tour of the campus, giving students the opportunity to see a range of specialist facilities, including the engineering, library, electrical installation and carpentry departments. Students were able to learn more about the courses and opportunities available while experiencing the impressive learning environment at SWSC.

Following the tour, students took part in a bricklaying taster session, where they learnt the fundamentals of bricklaying and had the chance to build walls and corners under the guidance of the course leader and current students. The session provided a valuable hands-on experience and allowed students to develop new skills while discovering what a career in the trade might involve.

The students made an excellent impression throughout the day, receiving glowing feedback from staff at the college.

The bricklaying session leader commented:

“I would be happy to take every person I met today. They are all clearly switched on and interested, trying their best with something new and getting stuck in. Wonderful to see.”

Tour leader Georgie was equally impressed, saying: “The students were amazing in the session and on the tour.”

The visit clearly sparked interest and enthusiasm amongst our students, with many reflecting positively on their experience:

“I'd never thought about pursuing bricklaying before, but I really enjoyed it and I feel like I could be good at it.”

“I've always wanted to try it out.”

“I'd love to learn this as well as another trade like electrics.”

We are incredibly proud of how our students represented the school and would like to thank the team at South West Skills Campus for providing such a welcoming, informative and inspiring experience.

Visits like this play an important role in helping young people explore future opportunities, develop new skills and make informed decisions about their next steps after school. The enthusiasm, curiosity and positive attitude shown by our students throughout the day were a credit to the school, and we look forward to seeing where their future career journeys take them.
