The dramatic match saw both teams battle throughout, with the scoreline continuing to swing as neither side was prepared to give up.

Gordano’s goals came from Noah P and Charlie R, before Tom W produced a dramatic last-minute equaliser to make it 3–3 and force the tie into a penalty shootout.

With a place in the quarter-finals at stake, the pressure was on. Gordano goalkeeper Rhys W proved decisive, making two crucial saves during the shootout to keep his team in contention.

The winning moment came when Henry N calmly converted the decisive penalty, securing a 7–6 victory and sending Gordano through to the county cup quarter-finals.

The result is another positive moment for sport at Gordano School, where students have opportunities to compete across a wide range of sports and at different levels. From school teams and inter-school fixtures to extra-curricular clubs and competitions, sport forms an important part of school life and provides students with opportunities to develop teamwork, resilience, leadership and determination alongside their academic studies.

Gordano students regularly represent the school across a broad programme of sporting activities, competing against schools across the region and taking part in opportunities that allow them to develop their skills beyond the classroom.

For Sixth Form students in particular, sport provides an opportunity to continue representing Gordano while balancing their studies and preparing for life beyond school. The Sixth Form football programme gives students the chance to train, compete and develop as individuals and as a team, with fixtures such as the county cup providing opportunities to test themselves against strong opposition.

The victory over Beechen Cliff was a particularly memorable example of the determination and togetherness within the team.

Gordano coach and PE Teacher Mr George Hayward said: “It was an incredible game and a brilliant example of the character within this group. To come back with a last-minute equaliser, then hold our nerve through such a tense penalty shootout, says a lot about the team’s determination and togetherness. Rhys was outstanding in goal and Henry showed real composure to take the winning penalty. Credit to every player who contributed.”

The team will now prepare for the County Cup quarter-finals, with the players carrying the confidence from a memorable Round of 16 victory that showcased not only their footballing ability, but also their resilience, composure and team spirit.
