Careers Round-Up: Inspiring Encounters and Opportunities This Term

This term has been an inspiring one for careers education at Gordano School, with students taking part in a wide range of events designed to broaden their horizons, deepen their understanding of different industries, and help them consider their next steps. From veterinary science to engineering and car sales, plus our large-scale Year 10 Mock Interview Day, students have engaged enthusiastically with the professionals who generously shared their time and expertise. Here’s a look back at some of the highlights.

A Fascinating Insight into Veterinary Careers

We were delighted to welcome local Vet Emma Horner, who delivered a full and fascinating talk about life as both a Vet and a Vet Nurse. Emma’s passion for her work shone through as she discussed the rewarding moments that make the job so special, as well as the trickier aspects of working in animal healthcare.

She provided students with a wealth of valuable information about the experience, academic pathway, and essential skills needed to secure a place on a Veterinary course; guidance that will undoubtedly support those considering this highly competitive field.

A huge thank you to Emma for giving her time and inspiring our aspiring animal-care professionals.

Tea-time Networking: Spotlight on Engineering

Engineering took centre stage at this term’s Tea-time Networking session. We were fortunate to be joined by representatives from Baker Hughes, BEMA, and Weston College, who delivered three rounds of informative talks.

Engineering continues to be a vital sector of the UK economy, offering diverse roles and excellent local opportunities through Apprenticeships and T Level courses. With recruitment for September roles now underway, the timing of these sessions could not have been better.
Students left with a clear understanding of the types of careers available within engineering, what employers look for in strong candidates and how to begin searching and applying for opportunities in the sector.

We are extremely grateful to our visiting speakers for helping students see just how exciting and varied an engineering career can be.

Exploring Car Sales Careers with a Former Student

This term also saw a special visit from a former Gordano student, now part of the Sales Team at Listers Toyota. Returning to school to speak to current students, he shared insight into how he secured his role, why he loves working in the car sales industry, and the skills that are key to success.

Car sales can be a challenging industry to break into, so his firsthand advice was invaluable for students considering this highly rewarding career path. We are always especially pleased to welcome back past students - their journeys provide such powerful inspiration and a real sense of what is possible after leaving Gordano.

Year 10 Mock Interview Day: A Resounding Success

One of the biggest events of the term was our Year 10 Mock Interview Day, which once again proved to be an incredibly valuable experience for students. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the fantastic employers and volunteers who supported the day. Their expertise, professionalism and constructive feedback offered students a realistic taste of the interview process and helped them build essential skills for their future.

A huge well done also goes to our Year 10 students. Employers commented on how confidently and maturely they approached their interviews — a reflection of their preparation, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn.

Well done Year 10! We are very proud of you.
