Gordano School Crowns its First “Hairstylist of the Year”
As part of Gordano’s Aspire Programme, designed to encourage students to unlock their potential and shine in areas linked to future pathways and real-world industries, the school was excited to host its very first Inter‑House Hairstylist of the Year Competition. With hairdressing continuing to be a popular post‑16 destination for many Gordano students, this new event offered the perfect opportunity to celebrate creativity, technical skill and career aspirations.
Interest in the event was high across the school. Students from Years 8 to 11 were invited to register their interest and secure a place in the competition. The diverse age range of participants created a vibrant atmosphere and demonstrated the growing passion for hairdressing within the student community.
Working alongside Creative Arts Technician Jennifer Dytham, who brought valuable industry insight and guidance, students were challenged to design and create a prom‑style “up‑do” incorporating braids.
Competitors were given 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete their look. Afterward, models and stylists headed into a photoshoot before judging commenced.
Industry Expertise from Reflections Training Academy
The judging panel included special guest Sarah Brace from Reflections Training Academy, a leading provider of hairdressing and beauty apprenticeships. Sarah was thoroughly impressed with the standard of work on display, commenting:
“I was blown away with the level of the skills the students showcased. They all followed the brief, and the top three took their looks to the next level by incorporating accessories. It was a pleasure to judge this competition and see the next generation of young, talented hairdressers.”
Her contribution provided students with an authentic professional experience and invaluable encouragement for those considering future training in the field.
Celebrating the Winners
After careful deliberation, the judges announced the top three:
- 🥇 1st Place – Grace, Year 11 (Model: Laila)
- 🥈 2nd Place – Joseph, Year 11 (Model: Bella)
- 🥉 3rd Place – Rosie, Year 10 (Model: Jenna)
All three winning styles demonstrated exceptional creativity, technical precision and thoughtful interpretation of the brief.
The event highlighted promising futures for some of our young stylists. Both Grace and Joseph, currently in Year 11, are hoping to continue their hairdressing journey through apprenticeships with Reflections Training Academy.
All students were absolutely fantastic, showing skill, resilience and creativity. It really was a fabulous event enjoyed by all. We hope many will be inspired take part again next year.
Miss Pope, Lead of Aspire Programme
The inaugural Hairstylist of the Year competition was a huge success, and the school hopes it will become a regular fixture in the Aspire Programme calendar. We look forward to seeing even more students take part next year—and perhaps discovering future stars of the industry.
