Gordano School Students Step Onto the Mat with Local BJJ Club

Students at Gordano School recently had the opportunity to experience something new and challenging; A group of Year 11 pupils took part in a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) session hosted by Portishead Grappling School, strengthening an ongoing partnership aimed at broadening the curriculum and enriching student experiences.

The session was led by Charlie Geary, a former Gordano student (2014/15), making the event particularly meaningful. Charlie’s return to the school community perfectly embodied the “Give Back” element of Gordano’s ethos, as he generously delivered the session free of charge at his dojo on Harbour Road.

During the session, pupils were introduced to the fundamental principles of BJJ, including grappling techniques, body positioning, and the importance of resilience and patience. Students quickly discovered that while some techniques such as choke holds may appear straightforward, mastering them requires significant time, discipline, and practice.

Staff were delighted with how well the pupils conducted themselves throughout the experience, demonstrating respect, determination, and a willingness to step outside their comfort zones. Their enthusiasm has already earned them an invitation to return for a future session.

Looking ahead, the school hopes to expand this opportunity to other year groups, giving more students the chance to engage with this fast-growing and highly technical sport.

This collaboration highlights Gordano School’s ongoing commitment to providing diverse and meaningful learning experiences—encouraging students to dream big, do their best, and give back to their community.
