Congratulations to Gordano student Sam Iles from Year 13 pictured below (third from the left.) Sam was recently selected to play as a percussionist for ‘The Cory Band.’ Based in South Wales, the band are the current European, National, British Open and Brass in Concert titleholders, as well as being the top ranked brass band in the world.
Sam is one of the busy team of percussionists, playing anything from drums to timpani, xylophone or tubular bells and tambourine.
Also a member of Filton Concert Brass band in Bristol and the National Youth Brass Band for 3 years. Sam’s musical talents have been recognised and as a result, he has been invited to play in concerts as a guest player in their percussion section. The above performance was in St Mary's Church in Bridgwater on December 1st where the band played to a packed audience, led by conductor Philip Harper. The concert included an eclectic mix of music, from traditional pieces to popular music - a particular highlight of the concert was a piece from Rudyard Kipling's "Jungle Book."
Sam comments, “It was a fantastic experience to play to such a large audience with the Cory band alongside such talented musicians. I was playing with musicians who are at the very top of their game. Everyone was really friendly and encouraging and it was a great event to be part of.”
Sam is due to perform with them again in Manchester later in January at a Brass Festival being held at the Royal Northern College of Music and Drama, and at the Victoria rooms in Bristol on Sunday 2nd February - tickets available from the Cory band website here: https://coryband.com/
