Community Trust Sports Centre – Official Opening
Gordano School Sports Centre held an official opening ceremony during which guests, Bristol Rovers manager Paul Buckle and Commonwealth gold medal-winning gymnast, Imogen Cairns, from Portishead, unveiled a plaque to mark the official opening of the centre which is now under the operation of Gordano Community Trust.
The trust took over the management of the centre from North Somerset Council in April last year, since which work has been carried out to replace the all-weather pitch at the sports centre with a new synthetic surface. Improvements have also been made to changing facilities and a new 3G court is available for school use and hire.
A new centre manager, Lawrence Gully was appointed in September and community use of the Sports Centre by clubs and individuals has increased.
Mr Gully said: "Gordano School and Community Trust are delighted to be able to provide first class sports facilities for students, sports clubs and the community of Portishead."
Future plans for the Sports Centre include integrating a fitness suite, providing facilities for indoor cricket games and increasing the number and range of classes on offer.
The community trust is made up of school governors Julian Brookes and Simon Leech, along with Headteacher Gary Lewis and business manager Clare Sanders.
The trust is responsible for the overall management of the sports centre and is currently looking for additional trustees.
