31st January 2014

The focus for this year has been all-round education and I am incredibly proud with the way that the school has risen to the challenge: our school Shakespeare production has been playing to ‘sold out’ houses this week and the reviews have been superb; at the weekend we will have 120 of our students doing expedition training on the Welsh mountains; our sports teams have ben enjoying success in competitions and tournaments on an unprecedented scale. The quality is certainly there but it is my hope that every one of our pupils engages fully in the extra-curricular life of the school.  You can find the link to the extra-curricular programme on the ‘breaking news banner’ on the front page of the website if you would like to see more of the opportunities available and I hope that you will encourage your son or daughter to get involved if they are not yet taking part.
I’m writing this piece on Thursday and looking forward to attending Midsummer Night’s Dream this evening.  My colleagues have been raving about the sparkle and zest that the production has had so I anticipate great things!  I can’t begin to thank all the students, staff and parents who have supported us in delivering so massive an undertaking as a school play but I must thank the director and impresario, Stefan Chilcott.  I am very grateful for all that he and his team have done.
After a frustrating delay we are about to start work on our Second Sports Hall project.  Our contractors, Collinsons, will be on site from next Monday. The new Hall will be going up in a tight space at the back of school so some construction traffic may need to access the site during the day.  I can assure parents that we have taken every step to make this a safe process and one which is considerate to our neighbours.
We still have some space for additional parents who might be interested in sharing some views on school uniform as part of our review. The meeting is at 6.30pm on 4th February and if you intend to come I would be grateful if could let me PA, Mrs Shirley Boden, know.
I’m currently turning my mind to the next topic for a parent focus group; one thought is home-school communications.  If you have any views or ideas about issues which we could improve and that you would like to offer a parent view I’d be delighted to hear them.
