I am delighted to have had the news that our bid for funding to improve several key aspects of our site has been successful. We had submitted requests for funding for about £1.4m to reroof our Creative Arts and Science areas and, more excitingly, build a second larger Sports Hall with an integral fitness gym. This is fantastic news and, frankly, beyond my expectations. We have started to develop our plans and I look forward to posting drawings in this blog to share the progress with you. Academy status is certainly addressing the needs that I had hoped it would.
I need to congratulate our DT faculty and in particular, Matthew March, Ben Hunter-Craig, Simon Julyan and Tom Southey of Year 13 who reached the quarter finals of Southampton University’s Robotics Challenge. Their Robot was called Thunder Puppet and you can see a YouTube video of it in action if you use the link at the end of the website news story. My thanks to our DT Technician, Richard Moore, who supported the students so well.
The Robotics challenge is another feather in the cap for DT at Gordano. With recent success in the Arkwright Scholarships and coming at the same time as the Lego Robotics League, which Mr Higgs launched last week, we are building a reputation for excellence in the field of design and engineering. More will follow I am sure.
Head Boy and Head Girl
We are just about to interview for the next Head Boy and Head Girl. This gives me the chance to express my thanks for their superb year in office to the current incumbents, Adam Grey and Ellie Thornhill. They have acted as ‘Associate Governors’ of the school and have been tremendous hosts at school events and advocates for the needs of our students. I wish them all the best for their studies at Oxford University next year. They have been very well supported by their excellent Deputies, Tom Clough and Esme Tuttiett. I am sure their successors will build on their legacy.
There is a certain inevitability about my last topic: Summer exams. We are at full stretch supporting, challenging and cajoling Year 11 and Sixth Form towards exams success. All students in these year groups should be deep in their revision campaign by now. If any parent would like advice or support we would love to help!
