12th January 2012
Already the Christmas holidays seem to have receded into the mists of December and we are in the rush of events in the New Year at school. As I write I can hear the thumping of the foundations being piled for the new Sixth Form Study Building. Although the location of the construction compound is a difficult one we have had very little disruption other than some noise and we can take that in our stride.
We have also gone straight into the exam season yet again and have GCSE, AS Level and A2 Level modules being taken now and in the coming days. I am sure that many parents will share my relief that the system will soon be returning on a simpler structure with fewer modules. To help manage the very high number of exams, controlled assessments and coursework our Deputy Head, Gavin Ball, has placed a Curriculum Calendar for each year group on the Parents Page of the website and I hope that it will help us all manage the pressure points.
We have had some very exciting news on both the music and sporting fronts. Rachel Hinchliffe in Year 11 has won the North Somerset Concerto Prize and will be performing the Haydn Trumpet Concerto with the county’s Senior Youth Orchestra at a Concert in March. For anyone who attended our December Concert or Carol Service it will come as no surprise that our students are achieving at this level and my congratulations go to Rachel and her family. We also had great success on the football pitch last Tuesday when our girls’ team defeated Poole High School 4-3 in a thrilling match. They have now qualified for the Quarter Finals of the National Cup. Really well done to the goal scorers, Annie Colson and Maisie Kincaid!
I am delighted to welcome Fiona May to our Governors. She has now attended her first meeting and will be finding her feet in this important sphere. We have a further vacancy and you will see that nominations are invited in an advert in this week’s newsletter. There is also a Governors’ Surgery on Tuesday, 24th January between 6pm and 7pm. Our Chair and Vice Chair will be available in addition to myself and if anyone would like to raise any issues with us I would invite you to arrange an appointment by contacting the Governors’ Clerk, Mrs Shirley Boden, on 01275 842606 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Mark Hill at the Sports Shop on the High Street is now our uniform stockist. I hope that he will quickly establish a reliable supply of high quality uniform items. If parents do experience any difficulties please let us know.
I would like to wish all our families a very happy and successful year in 2012 and I look forward to continuing Gordano’s close partnership with our parents in the year ahead.
