10th May 2011

The sunshine and warmth of the summer term are working their magic on the site here at School.  Fresh leaves, mown grass and a very positive atmosphere are easing us into the exam season and helping to relieve some of the pressures of what could otherwise be a very tense time of year.

This week also sees our Year 11 Celebration Events and Ball on Thursday.  These will be my first and I am greatly looking forward to a fun and festive day.  We really do have something to celebrate as we are filled with confidence and pride in the current Year 11.  They have worked hard and I wish them all the very best of luck in their examinations.  Yet the Celebration Day is not a leavers’ event.  Year 11 will have a full programme of revision lessons and if any parents are unclear of how students will be supported in the run up to exams I would ask them to contact Mr Bell or their House Learning Manager here at school.

To continue the summer theme, I shall turn to the issue of uniform.  I am very grateful to parents who give us their full support on uniform.  If hot weather arrives in June it is traditional to dispense with ties and jumpers but until and unless I communicate this change I would ask for your support in maintaining smart and full uniform.

Our Academy plans are rolling forward and we have heard that our application has been approved by the DfE Academy Board and is now awaiting Secretary of State’s approval.  We shall be issuing a ‘Statement of Intent’ by the governing body to make clear our 100% commitment to the comprehensive nature of the school, our structure of governance (which will be unchanged) and the commitment that we give to our staff that their conditions of employment will be completely maintained.

We have had some good news from the sports fields and have had victories in county championships in both girls’ football and orienteering.  The School outdoor education team are now very focussed on next weekend’s Ten Tors events down in Dartmoor and I wish all competitors (and their families!) good luck.  Let’s hope for overcast but dry conditions!
